WHAT ABOUT THE APOCRYPHA? The word "Apocrypha" comes from the Greek word abscondita which referred to historical writings not considered inspired according to Jewish rabbis. The books of the Apocrypha are not in the original Old Testament which was preserved by the Jews (read Romans 3:1-2). These books were written during the 400 years of silence between the Old and New Testaments and give some history of that time period. The years of silence was prophesied in Jeremiah 23:33-40 when the time would come where nobody is to proclaim "the burden of the Lord" which was a statement used by inspired prophets similar to "thus saith the Lord." The Apocrypha does not contain any of these proclamations. The Apocrypha was also not written in the Hebrew language which was always used by Old Testament prophets and historians. To top it all off, the Lord Jesus Christ and His apostles never quoted one statement from the Apocrypha which is the ultimate reason why it isn't inspired. The Apocrypha is only to be considered as uninspired Jewish history during what is known as "intertestamental times" (or times between the Old and New Testaments) especially when a patriotic Jewish group known as the Maccabees fought for there religious freedom against Syria that was ruled by a wicked man named Antiochus Epiphanes. When they defeated the Syrian army, they got their religious freedom back and it was during this time the Pharisees and Sadducees came on the scene with their teachings of the Old Testament law combined with their man-made traditions (Matthew 15:1-9). |
