The Cookie Jar: Controversial Topics |

What is meant by the words "to him that overcometh" that Jesus used toward the churches in Revelation 2 and 3? People who believe in "works salvation" push this to an extreme. Such people are ignorant to the Bible's definition of what an "overcomer" is. Remember, anyone who builds a whole doctrine on verses taken out of context and not rightly dividing the word is on very shaky ground. We don't go by portions of the Bible, but by "every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). To know what an overcomer is, you must refer to 1 John 5:5 which says, "Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?" On the flip side, the word "believe" does not refer to intellectual knowledge of salvation (James 2:19), but actual repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:21). |
