REVEREND WANNABE

by James S. Hodges

Greetings unto you
O’ dear young man
Having a desire to seek
And to do God’s plan

There are many temptations
You may already know
Since you surrendered to Christ
And on God’s path you go

But there is one that is greatest of all
Within the religious realm
Please pay close attention
I don’t mean to overwhelm

One among most preachers
A temptation you cannot see
It’s a person within ourselves
Named Reverend Wannabe

He does not stand for truth
Hoping not to offend
Just for the sake of others
Calling him “reverend”

Accepting man’s person and flattering titles
May lead to his fortune and fame
But in Psalm 111 verse 9
“Reverend” is God’s name

Yes, I know he’s a great man
Among many he’s so profound
But not a preacher just a textbook
Theologically wired for sound

Of all the idols that God despises
In the earth, the sky, and the sea
One is the most deceiving of all
Named Reverend Wannabe
