WHALE UNIVERSITY

by James S. Hodges

I was going to the land of ease
Sailing gently through the sea
It never was my intention
To enroll in Whale University

As I went to the bottom of the ship
Hoping to get some sleep
Along came a storm so fierce
Which made everybody weep

So I awoke and told my story
To everyone on board
That I’m going in the wrong direction
By running away from the Lord

Then I commanded all the people
To toss me out in the sea
That was my orientation
Into Whale University

For I am just like anyone
Indeed I was very scared
Never expected to be swallowed
By a fish that God prepared

Three days and three nights in its belly
Crying to God in my affliction
Yes, I know what you’re thinking
But truth is stranger than fiction

Then I was vomited out
Upon the dry land I went
Having a will to serve God
Telling others to repent

Knowing I forsook my own mercy
By observing lying vanities
Is the greatest lesson I have learned
Than in all other universities

The education of life does not consist
Of going to Harvard or to Yale
But learning from God in His classroom
In the belly of a whale
